Scampston Hall

We were awarded a combined contract for the restoration of a number of brick buildings and two stone structures on the Scampston Estate.

The estate grounds were designed by Capability Brown, the famous landscape architect.

The works have coincided with the 300th anniversary of his birth and were funded by Natural England.

The works comprised of:

Two horse stables

One horse stable with attached carriage shed

One stone rock folly

One stone bridge

One brick ice house

Pump house and ornamental pond

Torched lime mortar roofs in place of any underfelt

All works were built using hot lime mixed mortars, split lath and torched roof handmade joinery including copying roof truss frames.

Areas inside the stables still had their cobbled floors and we had to both patch where possible or take up and relay. Indeed one floor was very well detailed including formal cobbled channels but was honey combed with rat runs.

I designed a way to pump grout down the holes to strenghten the floor and then repair the holes. This meant all the original details were kept in situ.

The buildings were all designed and laid out by Capability Brown to present a number of different vistas.

Works to the Icehouse included building a new arch to the barrelled access tunnel and re-building the flank walls.

The pump house works included rebuilding the five top courses to all elevations chopping out some 350 individual bricks and selective re-pointing works. The wall tops were covered with turf sod and the intrerior cleaned of all its collective spoilia and received four coats of hot lime wash.

The ornamental pond was cleared, we then removed the cement render from its walls, copings were lifted, repaired or renewed and rebedded. The pond walls were then re-rendered with natural Roman cement render.

The Rock Folly required buttressing to support the delicate structure before and work could start. The remit required brickwork rebuild and stone re-building and complete repointing to all elevations.
